Bungalow Progress

Hello, what's this?

The bungalow has grown another room!

I added a kitchen area, plus a walk-in pantry and half of an open staircase (I will install the upper half of the stairs after building the upstairs landing).

How it all fits together (the doorway at the top leads to the living room).

But wait - there's more!

I bashed together two of Greenleaf's mini greenhouse kits to make a screened-in porch. In smaller, older  homes, particularly in coastal areas with small lot sizes, it's not unusual to see porches screened in - or converted into rooms - to add precious space without changing the house's footprint. I have seen former porches converted into bedrooms, and in one case, a living room.

I originally planned on a stone floor, but wound up not liking the way it looked. My grandmother's midcentury house had a huge screened porch not unlike this one, but with a brick floor. I felt that brick walls and a brick floor would have been overkill, especially in 1:12 scale. So, a gently distressed wood floor fit the bill.

Next time: Spring Fling 2013 spoiler.

  5. I have an 'open' porch on my 'rl' bungalow but wish it were screened! Your porch looks amazing and I think you were right about the wood floor. A bead board ceiling might be nice, right? Of course you already know how much I adore B & W checkered floors! (My 'rl' kitchen has one, too)! Spooky. Your bungalow is really coming along!

    XOXO,
    John

    1. Thank you, John! I'm going to do a bead-board ceiling for sure...but I'm planning to hinge the porch roof for access, so I need to work that out first, then add the details. I love checkerboard floors too (I also have one in a room box I haven't shown yet)...unfortunately I've never had one in real life (my 1950s childhood home had some rather hideous late-1970s vinyl tile; I have no idea what the original floor was).

  6. Hi Anna! I love black and white checkered floors and they always seem elegant as well as visually interesting and practical! I have wanted one in my real life kitchens for the past 20 years and have yet to get one.... one keeps dreaming though. I like your ideas for the pantry and also the screened in porch! It was very clever to have bashed 2 kits to get the footprint that you wanted, way to go! I also have seen them used as summer bedrooms where the weather is humid and bugs are rampant. I love the way that you have emphasized the trim and inserted the brick in the recesses on the exterior. It is all looking clean and fresh and really coming together!

    1. Thank you, Elizabeth! The brick is actually applied to the basswood I used to build up/bump out the greenhouse walls, but the trim is so thick it looks recessed from a high angle. The first time I saw those little greenhouse kits, I knew they just had to be a screen porch. I still need to work out storage for the pantry...and I'm still debating making it into a laundry room instead!

  7. Hi Anna, sorry for commenting so late! The rooms you made a beautiful and I love the little details; like the green plant in a stone basin. You bashed the 2 greenhouse-kits very well! The result is perfectly in style with the rest of your house. Keep up the good work! Hugs, Liduina.
